Most people know what a hair appointment looks like from one side of the chair: drive somewhere, wait, sit, leave. Few people have seen it from the other side, especially when working with an in-home hair colorist along the Main Line who never drives to a salon at all.

That is the world Cassie Anderson works in every day. She spends her mornings behind her client’s kitchen chairs, moving from home to home rather than client to client across a single salon floor. Spending a day with her makes it clear how different that experience really is, for her and for the women whose hair she colors.

How a Private Hair Colorist Along the Main Line Spends Her Morning

Cassie’s day starts before she ever knocks on a door. She reviews each client’s hair history, last formulation, and goals so she arrives already thinking through the appointment ahead. For a balayage or highlight client, that means planning placement before she packs a single product. For a keratin treatment, it means confirming the right formula for that client’s texture and condition.

“I get to do two things I love: travel around and create beautiful, healthy hair. The flexibility of this model means I have to be organized, but it also means every appointment feels purposeful from the moment I arrive.”

Her kit reflects that same intention. Nothing is left to chance, because working out of a client’s home instead of a fully stocked backbar means preparation has to replace convenience.

What Happens When Cassie Arrives at a Client’s Home

There is a moment Cassie has come to recognize at nearly every appointment. The client opens the door, sees her on the step with her kit, and visibly relaxes. No commute, no parking, no waiting room. Just a familiar face at a familiar door.

She sets up quickly and quietly, working around the client’s space instead of taking it over. The consultation always comes first, even with long-standing clients. How has the hair been behaving? Any dryness or breakage since the last visit? What is working and what needs to shift?

“I focus my attention on one client at a time. That means the consultation is never a formality. It is where the real work starts.”

What the Color Process Looks Like Inside a Client’s Home

Color work done properly takes time, and Cassie does not rush it. For a balayage or highlight appointment, she paints or places color section by section, thinking through face shape, natural base, and how the color will grow out. The goal is always color that looks like it belongs to the hair, not something added to it.

Processing time unfolds differently here than in a salon. The client is in her own kitchen or her own chair, comfortable in a way a salon waiting area cannot replicate. Some clients work. Some read. Some just enjoy the quiet, and the conversation that fills those two or three hours often goes somewhere real. Cassie knows her clients’ families, their jobs, and their plans. They know hers.

“I love our clients. That is not something I say because I am supposed to. It is the actual reason I do this work the way I do it.”

When the color is ready, she checks timing and lift, rinses wherever works best in the home, and finishes with a spray that holds without stiffness, the kind of detail clients still notice three days later.

What Clients Walk Away With After an Appointment

Cassie never leaves a client with a vague suggestion to book again in eight weeks. She explains how the color will settle over the next few days, what to use to keep it vibrant, or for keratin clients, the first wash protocol and a realistic sense of how long the treatment will hold given their texture and lifestyle.

She packs up, clears the space completely, and leaves the home exactly as she found it. Then she is back in the car, heading to the next appointment along the Main Line.

What Keeps Cassie Coming Back Every Morning

We asked Cassie what the most rewarding part of her day-to-day work really looks like. Her answer is exactly why her clients keep coming back.

“Honestly, it is hard to narrow down because I feel rewarded in so many different ways. But if I had to choose one thing, it would be the one-on-one experience with my clients. In a salon, you hear stories about someone’s family or their pets. Doing this work the way I do, I actually get to meet them. Their kids pop in to say hello, their dogs are sitting at my feet. There is something about being welcomed into someone’s real daily life that makes this work feel genuinely personal in a way a salon floor never could.

And then there is the travel itself. Being outside, moving from one home to the next along the Main Line, sometimes even working outside with a client when the weather cooperates. Every day is completely different. That part never gets old.”
